Heat rises. In winter, the warmth your furnace generates rises toward your ceiling and, if insulation levels are inadequate, escapes through the attic. In summer, solar heat bakes through your roof and radiates down into your home through the attic floor. Proper attic insulation slows both processes, keeping your home more comfortable year-round and reducing the load on your HVAC system.
R-value measures thermal resistance β the higher the R-value, the better the insulation performs. Natural Resources Canada recommends R-50 to R-60 for attic insulation in Ontario’s climate zone.
Many older Ontario homes β particularly those built before the mid-1990s β were insulated to R-20 or less. This means they are losing heat in winter and gaining heat in summer at significantly higher rates than current recommendations allow for.
For most Ontario attics, blown-in insulation β either cellulose or fiberglass β is the most practical and effective option. Blown-in insulation:
Ontario and the federal government offer rebate programs for eligible attic insulation upgrades. Programs like Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus and other provincial/federal initiatives may provide financial support for qualifying upgrades. These programs typically require a pre-upgrade home energy audit from a certified energy advisor, and rebate amounts and eligibility criteria can change, so it’s important to confirm current details with the program provider.
Universal Duct Cleaning can guide you through the insulation upgrade process and help you understand what rebate preparation may involve.
