How Often Should You Clean Your Air Ducts in Ontario?

The short answer is: every 3–5 years for most homes. But depending on your situation, you may need it more frequently — or you may be able to go longer between cleanings.

The Standard Recommendation: 3–5 Years

Most HVAC professionals and industry guidelines suggest having residential air ducts professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years. This accounts for the normal accumulation of dust, debris, and household particulates that settle inside ductwork during routine daily life.

Over time, dust, pet dander, insulation fibres, cooking vapours, and other airborne particles accumulate inside supply and return ducts. While some buildup is normal and doesn’t immediately cause problems, heavier accumulation can affect airflow and contribute to dustier indoor environments.

When You Should Clean More Frequently

Certain circumstances call for more frequent duct cleaning than the standard 3–5 year schedule:

• You have pets — Pet hair and dander accumulate in ductwork faster than in pet-free homes. If you have multiple pets or breeds that shed heavily, annual or biennial duct cleaning is worth considering.
• You recently completed a renovation — Drywall dust, sawdust, and construction debris can infiltrate duct systems during any renovation, even with vents covered. Post-renovation duct cleaning is strongly recommended.
• You moved into a new home — You don’t know the cleaning history of the previous occupants. A clean at move-in gives you a fresh start.
• Someone in your household has respiratory sensitivities — While duct cleaning doesn’t treat medical conditions, maintaining a clean duct system is a reasonable part of managing indoor air quality.
• You’ve had a mold or pest issue — If rodents, insects, or mold have affected your home, the ducts should be inspected and cleaned as part of the remediation process.

New construction homes often have significant debris left inside ductwork from the building process — drywall dust, wood shavings, and insulation particles. If you’ve moved into a newly built home, having the ducts cleaned before you move in (or shortly after) is worth considering.
